#LocalGovMatters – Keeping Young People in Wisconsin

In this week’s podcast, Gwyn talks with Professor Randy Stoecker, UW Department of Community and Environmental Sociology and Allyson Watson, Communities Extension Educator for Outagamie County at UW Extension about their research “Gaining and Maintaining Young People in Wisconsin Communities.”

The three begin the podcast discussing the need for the research and the method research, then dive right into what the research showed.

Gwyn poses question regarding the concept of “bedroom communities” and the need for services – should they be public employees with full-time staff or is there still ability to have volunteers? How do communities get young people to get involved in local government?

The three close out the episode discussing some of the interesting components of the research – like the desire for local gathering spaces like coffee shops, and access to silent outdoor activities – highlighting parks at all levels.
